Oral Surgery

A lot of general dentists will refer their patients to an oral surgeon for the removal of a tooth or teeth. They are simply more comfortable doing this. Very few will extract impacted wisdom teeth, including yours truly. The reason for this is that wisdom teeth are in a difficult location. They can be hard to see and there can be little room to operate in. An oral surgeon has a lot of experience in dealing with this scenario and the necessary instruments to deal with complications.

Another difficult extraction can be a tooth that has had a root canal. This is because the tooth has "dried out" and is more brittle. These teeth have a tendency to break when they are being removed.

    Q & A: Oral Surgery

I just got my wisdom tooth removed but the dentiest left the root he said he couldn't get it out. Is this ok?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. If the root fragment is small it may be resorbed back into the bone. Your dentist may have stopped in order to prevent a worse injury such as damaging your mandibular nerve. This could cause permanent numbness on that side of your jaw. If you get swelling and/or pain you may need to visit an oral surgeon and have the root tip removed.

Dr. Cardwell: I had a molar second from last on right side removed with oral surgery last week. No pain because root canal was already done however, root was fractured and gum was infected. Every couple of days it filled with infection and I had to squeeze out and use peroxide. Had to extract it to rid myself of infection. Now, one week later I am healing with 4 stitches and noticed a piece of the tooth still in the gum. Two years ago on the left side the molar was extracted and no tooth remained there. No cotton plugs were used so what should I do? I am concerned due to having hip replacement surgery very soon and do not need any infection present before this surgery, please help! Thanks
You should have the piece removed prior to hip surgery. Go back to the dentist who removed the tooth. It is usually pretty easy to remove a tooth sliver.
